2018 Houses Awards – House Alternation and Addition over 200m2 Commendation
In adapting a nineteenth century terrace for contemporary living we were conscious of the benefit of discrete rooms as both private rooms (bedrooms, bathrooms) and shared spaces (library, lounge.) The intervention thereby retains the cellular nature of the Victorian plan, whilst introducing an unexpected spatial diversity – a full-height slender stairwell, a full-width horizontal kitchen/dining, a tiny bathroom, a gracious Victorian bedroom.
The project is an alterations to a Victorian terrace within a Conservation Area. Whilst a bespoke work for a specific client, it offers the opportunity to test ideas related to one of our most enduring housing types – the row-house – and the adaptation of nineteenth century fabric for contemporary living.
