We acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and live, and recognise their continuing connection to land, water and community. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging who have maintained Country for millennia.

The architecture team behind the successful bid for the Sydney Metro West Five Stations includes Bates Smart + SAA Architects, John McAslan + Partners, Neeson Murcutt Neille, Stewart Architecture and Aileen Sage.

The Five Stations are part of the 24km Sydney Metro West line connecting Greater Parramatta to Sydney’s CBD. The package comprises the design and construction of five new underground metro stations along the Sydney Metro West alignment – Westmead, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock and The Bays – and is targeting a 2032 opening date.

Sydney Metro awarded the project to the Metro Vista team in early 2026, led by Gamuda as Principal Contractor, with Laing O’Rourke and DT Infrastructure as delivery partners. Key contributors included Djinjama for Design with Country and TCL for Landscape.

SAA Architects’ Executive Director, Campbell Cumming, says “We’re excited to leverage our extensive Asian experience to deliver safe, reliable and efficient metro stations for Sydney. People-oriented station design shapes how commuters identify and engage with their neighbourhoods and the wider city, leading to greater convenience and an enhanced quality of life.”

Bates Smart Managing Director, Philip Vivian, says “We have come together as a diverse group of architects who, starting with a Country first approach, have crafted a series of individual stations that respond to their unique contexts to create meaningful urban places and act as a catalyst for urban transformation.”

SAA Architects has designed and delivered over 100 metro stations across Asia, including three underground stations for the recently completed Stage 4 of Singapore’s Thomson-East Coast Line, and ten underground stations for Malaysia’s MRT Putrajaya Line in Kuala Lumpur that opened its doors for passenger service in 2023.

Bates Smart is a large Australian citymaking design practice with deep experience across integrated transport developments in several Sydney Metro station precincts, including Waterloo, Victoria Cross and Gadigal stations.
John McAslan + Partners contributes transport infrastructure and precincts around the globe and has completed two stations for Sydney Metro, at Central and Waterloo.

Neeson Murcutt Neille, Stewart Architecture and Aileen Sage are highly awarded, bespoke local practices who bring fresh perspectives to the transport sector through their strong design perspectives and deep understanding of Sydney’s urban and community contexts.
