Neeson Murcutt Architects was runner-up for the Perry Park Redevelopment design competition. The site is an unexpected pocket of quietness and tweetering birdlife set against an industrial backdrop. It is Alexandria’s arboretum. We add to this inventory of tree species to create an urban forest, literally filling the park with trees. We locate the indoor community courts adjacent the outdoor hockey field to create a contiguous, stepped ‘field of sports’. A structurally minimalist ‘pleated’ roof to the sports halls optimises orientation and references the roof geometries of nearby industrial buildings.
